Banks in Japan are open Monday to Friday 9:00- 15:00. They are closed on Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays. If you bank with a major bank in a large city you will enjoy a 24 hour ATM service. However, in regional banks outside of large cities, your ATM will actually have open hours. The cashpoints/ATM's usually stay open until 19:00 and from 9:00-17:00 on Saturdays. They are usually open for a short period on Sundays.

24 hour ATM services are increasingly available in convenience stores and if you are with a larger bank you may be able to take advantage of this for a fee.

Post office ATM's are open longer than regional banks, and if you have a post office account you can use the machines nationwide. It is possible to use your cash card in a different bank's ATM, but a 105 yen charge will be added to any other charges that may apply. Check with your bank as if you are with a smaller bank you will be able to use the machines of certain larger national banks for a small fee.

FUROKOMI BANK TRANSFER

ATM's/Cash points in Japan allow you to transfer money to other accounts, incurring a small charge. This is a useful service to pay certain bills with or to put money into other peoples accounts. All you need are the details of the person or company's bank and account. Take these details to your bank and ask the attendant to help you with a furikomi and they will help you at the cashpoint/ATM. After your first transfer the ATM will ask you whether you would like a card printed which includes details of the bank account you just transferred money to. You can then use this card to speed up the process on future transfers.
